I wonder how Mary would have done.
Would y'all be mad at Mary too?

I see y'all point but I guess I don't care alot.

Light enough to be painted in black face.

Aside from that point, the spirit of Nina's message was celebrating her dark skin.

exactly, this is something producers/the director would know if they were adequately trying to portray her life...this makes me nervous for the story itself and the promotion is going to be huge, watch! so even tho it might not be the only nina movie, it is setting the stage as the first major production...ppl will remember it first always, it's a big deal

if that's the case, where was the uproar when jaime foxx got the role for ray charles? he wasn't known for his acting prowess. you can argue that he was a good impersonator but he did make a movie called "booty call" tbh.
Simone's daughter hasn't been too psyched about the 34-year-old Star Trek star's casting either, telling the New York Times, "My mother was raised at a time when she was told her nose was too wide, her skin was too dark. Appearance-wise [Saldana] is not the best choice."
the thing is....there are enough dark skinned woman who want to act/are actresses and are struggling for work...bc they look TOO black.

now you have a role in which a TOO black/regular black actress, who likely does not work very often, would be the obvious PHYSICAL match, and they choose to paint someone up like a 2 bit harlot, with a fake nose.

no thank you.

if Zoe was an amazing actress i might be like well she can act. but she is pretty basic. but maybe this will be her role to shine and prove me wrong.  likely not--bc she doesn't draw me in.

Personally, it's both the talent and the appearance. No one who knows Nina Simone's story can deny how important a role her appearance played in her art. So many talented black actresses struggling, out of work and yet they pick Zoe to play Nina. SMH...

yea but he obviously killed the audition and in terms of appearance i remember seeing pics from the set and he embodied that man in every way possible, at first when he was cast i was like wtf but as i saw the pics from set and when i watched the movie, he did it justice

zoe is already losing massive points for her appearance in this role....big difference
zoe's appearance will put me off the whole thing cuz that is all i will be focusing on (how fake she looks as nina simone)
