You can't figure out what's interesting unless you actually do things.
So you tried to read one book? Read a different genre. Find a book on something you want to learn about. Go to the library and pick something at random.
I always recommend people listen to NPR (national public radio). That way you stay up on current events but you hear so many interesting stories you can't help but to have interesting conversations. Some NPR shows for you to check out: All Things Considered, This American Life, Fresh Air, Marketplace, and Radio Lab. Or listen to some podcasts...go on itunes. If you like Dr. Drew, he has a podcast. But there are lots.
In the process of learning things, you will find things that interest you. And weren't you having trouble in school? (or was that someone else?) If you were, you should be using this time to solidify your skills/knowledge in the areas you were struggling.
