WTF: Russell Simmons’ YouTube Network Releases ‘Harriet Tubman Sex Tape’

Shame on you Russell Simmons.

Shame on you Russell Simmons.

I guess nothing is sacred anymore.

All Def Digital (ADD), brainchild of media mogul Russell Simmons and Awesomeness TV CEO Brian Robbin, recently released a YouTube clip reimagining just how Mother Moses freed so many slaves.

In All Def Digital’s web series, ADD History: Harriet Tubman Sex Tape, YouTube comedians DeStorm Power, Shanna Malcolm, and Jason Horton offer their “outlandish and irreverent” take on “the off-record account of how Harriet Tubman blackmailed her master into letting her run the Underground Railroad!”

During the “reenactment,” Tubman seduces her master, telling him, “All these years I’ve been acting like I didn’t enjoy our special time together.”  The pair then engages in a sex act that culminates with Harriet’s master confessing his love for her, while she brushes him off, saying, “Look n* , I don’t give a damn about who you love.”

*long heavy sigh*

I’m not even sure where to begin.

Downplaying the very real rapes and abuse Black women endured during slavery? Check.

Casting an obese Harriet Tubman to play into of the negative stereotypes about Black women’s bodies? Check.

Portraying Black women as Jezebels who use sex to get what they want? Check.

Normalizing the idea that all Black women are sassy and always have something smart to say? Check.

Portraying Black men as coons? Check, check, check.

This video is not only completely unfunny, but it’s a slap in the face to Harriet Tubman, as well as the millions of enslaved African Americans who suffered through the unspeakable horrors of slavery.

I’m also saddened that Russell Simmons, who has been outspoken on issues of race and class over past few years, signed off on this disrespectful parody our history for the sake of a few YouTube views.

Sounds like the kind of stuff they wanted to have Chapelle doing on Comedy Central.

The video was beyond disrespectful and not funny in the least. I think the word coon is thrown around way too much but every single black person involved in this is a coon. They should all know better and do better.

Simmons with all his funds and influence could have easily released something that would
positively enrich black history instead of sh!tting on it with pleasure and offering up age old stereotypes of black people.

Russell Simmmons’ (@UncleRush) apology for the Harriet Tubman Sextape video.

In the whole history of Def Comedy Jam, I’ve never taken down a controversial comedian. When my buddies from the NAACP called and asked me to take down the Harriet Tubman video from the All Def Digital YouTube channel and apologize, I agreed.

I’m a very liberal person with thick skin and it’s hard to offend me. My first impression of the Harriet Tubman piece was that it was about what one of actors said in the video, that 162 years later, there’s still tremendous injustice. And Harriet Tubman outwitting the slave master, I thought it was politically correct. Silly me. I guess I’m older now and instead of fighting for one piece of content, I can understand why so many people are upset. I have taken down the video. Lastly, I would never condone violence against women in any form, and for all of those I offended, I am sincerely sorry.

~Russell Simmons

Grand opening, grand closing. Perhaps this is a unifying, teachable moment, with more good than harm done? Or perhaps not? A simple lapse in judgement, or something more sinister? A good idea with poor execution, or a calculated publicity stunt? Should be be advocating the censorship of what people consider to be their art just because we don’t agree with the message? Whatever it is/was, let the dialogue continue. Thoughts?

I get his reasoning but just can't understand how all of his sensibilities as a black man weren't challenged when he saw that. I totally get that black comedians especially can be provocative, bold, and politically incorrect in order to get across a point. I understand that he helped to give spotlight to and launch the careers of some of the greatest black comedians and comedian turned entertainers of the last 25 years. I get that a lot of them have probably said offensive things or done offensive sketches, and he gave them the platform to speak uncensored. I totally get it.

But if anything, the decades that he has been around that should have given him a hell of a lot more...wisdom on what to do with this particular sketch. It wasn't funny. Wasn't smart. Wasn't making any point worth having his brand associated with.

I don't think a Harriet Tubman skit should be off limits. But after watching that wack sh*t, tell them to rewrite the script and come back with a reshoot of the sketch that is funny and has a satirical or truth- behind-the-laughs point. If they aren't talented enough to do that then kill the project and move on to something more fitting for their skill levels.
