I think the message got twisted over time. My gramma used to say she
didn't need a man but that didn't mean that she didn't want one. She
did what she had to do to take care of her babies while she was
single. I think AA women back in the day were taught to be self
sufficient in case of your man gettin' lynched, sent off to war along
with the off chance of divorce.
Back in the day....to be self sufficient not only as a matter of
personal pride in being able to take care of yourself but just in
case.....just in case.
I think around the late 60's it morphed into you don't need a man
period ....that's what alot of women started teaching their girls (for
various reasons). They would give their girl children only half of the
African American Proverb. |
I agree with you, the AA
woman is historically the backbone of this country and by default has a
very strong role to play. Take a Civil War History course, and you'll
find that the AA woman was rocking her household and the white man's
household as well.
And I also agree that being strong back in the day was a necessity since the odds were really against you:
1. having to be strong bc your love interest (as you weren't allowed to be married) got sold by slave owners
2. having to be strong bc your husband (as you mentioned above) got lynched/arrested etc.
However,
now we've preached "strength" to AA girls to the point that we're not
teaching AA boys to be men who handle their responsibilities. Let
"mamma" handle it all while he acts a fool hanging in the street. I'm
tired of all the responsibilities for everything in the AA community
being pushed on us, while our male counterparts are given a pass for
being pathetic and those who do as is expected of a MAN (not a male) get
praise like they've climbed Mt. Everest.
The OP's post alone
proves that mantra. He didn't even mention that chicks can't get
pregnant solo, it's 100% the woman's fault from his POV and the sorry
punk who got her pregnant was just what? "Being a man?"
