Fox’s Stossel Explains Why Women Should Pay More for Health Insurance

by Noah Rothman | 8:18 am, October 31st, 2013 video 165

Doocy StosselFox Business Network host John Stossel sat down with Fox & Friends host Steve Doocy on Thursday and explained his controversial view that women should pay more than men for health insurance. Stossel said that this was appropriate because they use the services which hospitals provide and, as a result, they live longer.

“The web site is minor. They will fix that,” Stossel said of the problem-plagued HealthCare.Gov site. “Central planning is the problem because this just kills the market and the competition in the market that makes things better.”

“Yesterday, President [Barack] Obama stood in front of a bunch of women in Massachusetts and said, ‘No longer will those evil insurance companies be able to charge you women more,’” he continued. “But when did you last go to the doctor?”

Doocy was unsure. “Elisabeth [Hasselbeck] could answer quite quickly,” Stossel said.

“Women go to the doctor much more often than men,” he continued. “Maybe they’re smarter or maybe they’re hypochondriacs. Who knows? They live longer.”

“But if it’s insurance, you ought to be able to charge people who use the services more, more,” Stossel continued.

“It’s not fair if you pay less than she does,” Doocy shot back.

“It’s fair if you pay for what you use, unless you’re destitute,” Stossel concluded.

He ended the segment by saying that the Affordable Care Act has been a benefit for the public because it has focused the public mind on the fact that services cost money. He added that the law is forcing more people into health savings accounts as an alternative to the ACA.

Im not that mad at the rationale though .

I do wonder what the cost breakdown is .

He's an asshole.

Hypochondriacs? Really? That's why men die younger from undiagnosed/ late diagnosed conditions.

He's an asshole

I didn't even listen but looka here...if we need to pay more for health insurance then we need to be able to write off career wardrobe and beauty maintanance off on our taxes.

Dude...shut up.

I don't agree that women should automatically pay more than men, however I do agree that your cost for insurance should be based on how you use it. Someone who uses significantly less healthcare shouldn't pay the same amount as someone who uses way more. For instance, a woman who is in good medical health condition and only visits her doctor for well visits on occasion, shouldn't have to pay the same amount as a man that is ill and frequently requires care on a more regular basis. Sexual orientation shouldn't be considered. Use should.

It's the same with car insurance. Premiums are higher for drivers who are involved in incidents and need to file claims. I thinks it's fair that those insurance premiums are higher than a driver with no incidents.

My 2 cents...

Also he didn't mention single moms.  They typically have an employee + children plan that already costs more than what men pay for single coverage.   Women already pay more into the healthcare system as it is.

And the hypochondriac comment is bs.   Women are more likely to take a cold tablet and keep it moving.  Men tend to handle sickness very badly.  I'm not being sexist, just stating what I've seen.   The local press, a doctor and a specialist have to be notified whenever hubby has a head coldLOL

That's because men never go to the doctor even when they are sick. And the people who visit the doctors more often/who are ill still have to pay more out-of-pocket at the end of the day Ermm
