Hi,

I figured out a long time ago that gel does not like my hair at all!  It's crazy how much hair falls out of my head and the breakage when I put it in.  This morning, I decided to wash my hair and I had a little bit of gel left so I made the bad decision of using the rest of it in my hair.  Hair on my hands, hair in the sink, hair on my shoulders...hair everywhere.  Ouch  It was insane.  That was the last of my gel, thank God because I will never buy anymore again.
I read in here where people can use gel like crazy and their hair does well with it.  Why would it be so bad for my hair?  I have 4a fine thin hair.  Anyone with info on this?
                                                    Thanks.

Just a few questions

Do you deep condition?

Do you use a moisturizer/and or oil underneath it...

Do you ply your hair apart/comb while the gel is dry and all up in it???

Girl,
I have deep conditioned, used oil first, leave-in-conditioners..I use the gel when my hair is damp.  I've tried it in my hair in various ways, it just doesn't do well with me.

What gel do you use? I know some gels leave my hair super hard and prone to breakage.

I use fantasia ic hair polisher styling gel and it has a good hold but my hair isn't too hard.

Ecostyler gel is also really popular here.

I used Mizani gel, ecostyler gel and others..  There's something about the texture or ingredients of the gel?? I don't know but it is not good stuff for me.

I know my hair doesn't like gel that much either, though it does tolerate the ecostyler. Hopefully you'll figure out why exactly gel causes so much damage, but maybe you should get some kind of butter to use instead?

My 4b hair doesn't like any old gel either, sometimes the gel has protein in it you maybe sensitive to that. One solution I have found is Taliah Waajid's Lock it up gel, it can be used for styling and not just coils or lock starting, smells great and is not sticky. Another is Fanatasia IC styling gel with Aloe thats nice too. But I prefer Taliah Waajid. Good luck Wink

I have fine 4a/b hair too and I have yet to find a gel that doesnt make my hair dry as heck, which then leads to the breakage.  You can tell the difference even in a day. And i also co-wash, use oils, etc etc

I dont currently use any gels but i do use my castor oil to slick down edges or help hair clump and it makes my hair amazingly smooth (but definitely not like a gel).  Im thinking of trying alone or adding to the castor oil some natural aloe vera.  Ive heard ppl say good things about aloe gel and I dont think it would dry out the hair.  I actually have an aloe plant at home so im just wondering if I can take a chunk off and put the goop in my hair...(will search for thread).

Also, some people make gel using flax seeds.  Ive tried it a couple of times but couldnt really get the measurements right.  All you do is boil flax seeds and then strain out the gel it makes, you can add essentials oils or fragrance as you see fit.  I liked it but the first time i did it I made it too watery and the second time it was way to thick...lol.  but i do see the potential and its on my list of things to try again.
