hey yall.. just my 2 cents

I am from cali so i can only speakl for cali...

in cali our minimum wage is about $8hr....

you are hired as a server to provide serice... agreement being you work for minimum wage ...

let's do the math

server works 20hrs a week (example only)

20x8hr is 160...minus taxes and what not...

lets make it 130 after takes

the gov (irs) expects you to claim all your tips..
lets say that whole week you made $300 in tips about $60 a day

did you know that your check will be a big fat '0'

yes.. they tax your whole check.

servers rely on tips.. not their checks.. that's whole the system works!

Let's talk about the plus side of being a server though, let's say you earn 10-15 an hour on tips...you don't have to report your accurate income when tax time comes right? Or even better if you work in a pricey joint.

wonder that is true.  even tho the custom is 15-20%, the irs expects that the minimum will be 8% since some will tip less, some more and some not at all (rolls eyes).  but if a worker reports less than 8% then they will be allocated more tips to their w2 by the company.  so if they actually made less than 8% in tips they "could" be taxed unfairly.

it is customary in U.S to tip.  18% .. it used to be 10-15% but cost of living rose.

servers..tip out their busser and bartender..and if someone esle bring their food to the table..they tip them as well.

When your check is $100 and you tip nothing..

irs believes that the person made at least 18% and is not claiming all their tips... audits can happen.

beginning Jan 2014... large parties are no longer required to pay mandate gratuity ...

(exception ..only restaurants that allow it.. pay taxes to the gov..only those that care about their servers do)..

I have heard of large 20 top parties..come in rack an $800 bill and not tip Chit ...

CNAs get paid much less than servers and they do a HELLUVA lot more serving. Trust. They don't get tipped. They get a nice $7.50 per hour doing labor guaranteed to cause physical issues down the line.

I tip when people are worth tipping. I'm not going to tip you a cent if you were a bad waitress, and I NEVER tip at Asian restaurants. Bad service receives a nice big ole' 0 with a slash through it.

I'm salty about tipping kitchen beauticians. You absorb all profit for your service, I'm not giving you an extra $20.00 for making my hair look like what I paid you to make it look like.

I respect the janitorial staff and the bus driver, and I appreciate their service. I'm not tipping them.

I wont tip a server because i feel obligated to. I will do it if im able, and if I feel like. Not because i think they 'deserve it'.

i believe 8% (not 18%) is the overall threshold for the irs with regards to taxable tip income...
