it is a social construct but it's not a bad one.  It's kinda socialist in a way and I'm kinda socialist in a way.

Its not socialist AT ALL IMO....

A socialist would expect the government to enact basic minimal wage laws to ensure that servers are paid a fare and decent living wage.... such that people would not feel obligated to support their wage through tips...

This is nothing but widespread corporate greed... these restaurants are pocketing profits and underpaying staff, and it seems to have been accepted as a norm by society...

I really don't get it

People should be up in arms about the poor wages that these servers are paid, rather than about the customers who don't tip well...

well I did question why it hasn't happened yet on previous pages but we can wait for the gov to do something they're not going to do or we can do our part in paying for a service we are asking for.  In order for things to change it would take consumers and servers to come together in a way that would cripple their industry.  Is anyone ready for that?  Can they afford to just walk off the job for several months possibly years when scabs are ready and able?  It seems really complicated.  At this point, it's best to pay these people for waiting on us.

you believe that if these workers were paid a fair wage (at least minimum wage) the prices would also remain the same?

and to add, tipping goes back centuries.  So it's not just about Corp greed...but they are exploiting tipping to get out of doing what's right.

and this...especially if you already know they are not paid well.

i mean i'd respect a person more if they simply boycotted.

but to have all that insight and still go be served and not tip knowing full well you still lining the corp pockets and shafting the worker...well...just seems ridiculous, imo.

Yes.

But only if this is an important issue for you. Or if you feel tipping doesn't do enough to solve the root problem.
