one of the reasons there isn't anything left over is because ppl feel the need to buy ciroc or cristal or courvoisier instead of sky. 10 dollars. call it a night.
if Future made a song about Sky being the best vodka, people would stop spending extra on ciroc.

i think media influences a lot of things, i can see what OP is saying.
ETA: a lot of people want to be like their favorite popstars. i don't think thats a baseless statement at all.

Truthfully, I dont even pay attention to the lyrics in flashy music, or even understand them majority of the time, even if I do know the words...So there's nothing about the lifestyle that im wishing to have. I think ppl who try to copy these rappers appearances look pretty ratchet and I assume they are ghetto as hail if you want me to keep it real...
I see hood dudes driving around in expensive cars and wear flashy gear but own no pot to piss in...HARLEM!!!
My homegirl met a dude that won millions from a lawsuit and the first thing this 21 yr old boy did was purchase mad Jordans, and jewelry and got a Rolls Royce, and yea I judged the sh*t outta him...
If you live in any place filled with fronter's like NYC and ATL you gotta learn Old money<---->New money
As for flashy music, I listen for the beats...I love listening to well produced sounds...The beat of "I got Sacks" does some sh*t to me...
I have international ears by the way, so I listen to anything within any genre with wonderful production

i think it's the whole, i have this unattainable lifestyle that you don't have that kinda concerns me in many lyrics. it's like every other song on the radio. some ppl aren't saving b'c they're trying to keep up with appearances. |
IA with this and it is because as Jonesy said, ppl are idolizing these celebs. In my city, almost every young black or mixed girl is trying to look and act like Rihanna. I think people are lacking some things, like guidance and direction (that a family is supposed to provide, and when you look at how families are these days, esp black families, it makes sense) and they turn to pop culture for it. We have a generation of empty dreams, all looking and thinking and feeling the same. They find love in a hopeless place

I remember writing a paper also about Rap music and saying that for all it's evils rap music is simply American culture packaged neatly with a nice hook delivered with black faces.. It is misogynistic, materialistic , violent and insensitive. Don't be afraid to look at yourselves now, white America.
My teacher thought I was talking about her she wrote me a note attached to my paper lol.

you reach the inner community via music, since music is a big part of urban, ethnic and immigrant groups.
white people are also being targeted via other means, through their television viewing their reading so many options.
this isnt just about hiphop.
but in a 'ghetto' sense, this makes perfect sense because of the longstanding history or access and poverty.
the drive to be the made nigguh and that different black person often culminates in the tangibles. what does she drive, what does she drink, oh she's wearing red bottoms where does she live etc etc etc because these are the things the poor associated the haves with.
like jay said on the making of reasonable doubt, these are lil wins. we may celebrate a little too much, but we celebrate because we dont have anything
now, the issue that i would have with all this would be with the marketing companies, that push and perpetuate excesses aka luxury market targeting to the poor. your steve stoutes, your rocnations your lyor cohens etc etc these are the ones we need to take this issue with but that too is a losing battle as they try to make it
its bigger than rap
