Topic: Why do people say African-American hair... Posted: Jan 28 2013 at 7:08am |
|
...rather than saying African hair? Whenever I'm looking for articles, rather than African hair I always get topics talking about African-American hair. And on google it always auto-completes things to say African-American hair. If I moved to America would my hair suddenly become African-American hair? And what about Africans living in other parts of the world. Would you say they have African-British hair, African-Bulgarian hair or African-Argentinean hair? Sigh. Why do we have to make things so difficult.

It is likely that most of the articles you are reading are American in origin, so that is their focus.
That being said, I was quite salty when I heard Naomi Campbell being referred to as African American... I mean the chick is British...., you can't be referring to allllllllll Black people as African American...

yep...
if they were more enlightened they could use the terms/categories: straight hair, loose curls, or tight coils..
unfortunately, they are speaking as if they "behind closed doors".. or as a "generalization"..
I was dismayed when a forum member vehemently defined the hispanics at her work place by saying: "i've never heard them say the word "nappy" or "kinky" when they were around me."
Well the key phrase, dear is "When they're around me"..
Many a culture, especially here in the U.S. refer to hair on any person of african descent head as just one grade.
Little do they know, we all come from africa..

Kinky hair just means hair with kinks. Straight hair can be kinky too.

Funny enough. I've never actually seen anyone referring to their own hair as African-American hair on a black hair forum.

Most of the purchasing power are done by African-Americans or Black Americans if you wanna go down that route. This is based off of my assumption. Nothing more.
