MTV’s The Real World will go down in history as one of the first reality TV shows to give the world a glimpse into the sometimes scandalous lives of young people going through growing pains in front of a camera. Season 30, “Real World: Skeletons” is in the works and expected to be the most explosive season yet. Former rivals, secrets and estranged family members will unexpectedly show up to the home in Chicago to throw a wrench in things.

Looks like it will be one for the books, although it seems like the show is running out of ideas. After hitting all of the major U.S. cities and going overseas, you’d think we have gotten the point that people aren’t polite and can be very real. Nonetheless, it is the network’s longest running and most successful show that is often hard to turn away from.

The most memorable moments of the show, over the last two decades, often stem from Black roommates known for controversy, yet educating the world on common misconceptions in urban life. Here is a look back at the Black cast members from seasons 1 – 15 and what they’re all up to in 2014.

KEVIN POWELL, NEW YORK 1992

Meet America’s first non-scripted “angry Black man”.   Kevin was known for being at the center of racially sensitive topics, often alienating himself from the other roommates.

Memorable moment: Things reared an ugly head when Kevin and Julie got into a heated debate addressing white privilege and  racial stereotypes.

Life after The Real World: Kevin went on to become a senior staff writer for Vibe and became a political activist after several unsuccessful runs in New York’s 10th congressional district.

HEATHER B. GARDNER, NEW YORK 1992

Known as a reality checker, Heather was street-wise yet a less confrontational cast mate on season 1. Heather spent her days perfecting her craft as an aspiring hip hop artist.

Memorable Moment: Several confrontations between her cat and Norman’s dog.

Life after The Real World: Her first album “Taking Mine” was released in 1996. She now co-hosts with Sway Calloway on his Sirius M show, Sway in the Morning.

TAMI ROMAN, LOS ANGELES 1993

Tami sent viewers on her emotional roller coaster. Most of her time was spent battling self-esteem and relationship issues. Tami went far enough to get her jaw wired shut as a weight loss method and allowed viewers to get a glimpse inside of her decision to have an abortion on television.

Memorable moment: Laying the smack down on David after he yanked away her bed covers while she was only in her undies.

Life after The Real World: Tami is now a successful entrepreneur. She is also a model and actress, notorious for being violent toward other reality stars (not much has changed since 1993), particularly on VH1’s Basketball Wives.

DAVID EDWARDS, LOS ANGELES 1993

A prankster in his own right, David wreaked havoc all throughout the house, causing a headache for the other roommates.

Memorable moment: Getting beat up by a girl and being the first roommate ever to be voted out of the house.

Life after The Real World:  He participated in a few Real World / Road Rules challenges, at the center of even more controversy when a contestant spit on him. According to IMDb, David launched a career as an actor and director, with credits inScary Movie 3.

MOHAMMED BILAL, SAN FRANCISCO 1994

Cool, calm and collected. Mohammed kept a relatively low profile during season three. The notorious David aka “Puck” ran rampant, stealing the show. After Puck was asked to leave, Mohammed cleansed the house of negative energy, as a part of his Muslim practices.

Memorable moment: He and Puck had a slight confrontation on the reunion show. Mohammed, flipped the cap off Puck’s head.

Life after The Real World: Mohammed has kept away from the spotlight. He’s reported as being in the band, Midnight Voices in the San Francisco Bay Area.

SHARON GITAU, LONDON 1995

This season was a yawn fest in comparison to those before. One of the more cultured cast members, Sharon the singer/songwriter, was well-traveled and grew up as an only child. The roommates often found themselves inundated with her verbose nature. Because she was raised by her mother, Sharon often grappled with her sexuality and perception of men.

Memorable moment: A surgical procedure to remove a growth from her tonsils, forced Sharon to pipe down.

Life after The Real World: According to her Twitter account, Sharon lives in London as a film composer and is still active in music.

CYNTHIA ROBERTS, MIAMI 1996

The hard-working waitress was up front and genuine with her roommates, and avoided conflict. The others were busy getting it on in the infamous “shower scene” while it seems as though Cynthia was questioning her very existence on the show.

Memorable moment: Cynthia participated in the Road Rules: All Stars challenge in 1998. She threatened to leave the show after the guys had to whip up a soup made of insects to feed the women.

Life after The Real World: Cynthia has led a private life, now married with a family.

KAMEELAH PHILLIPS, BOSTON 1997

Kameelah’s days in the house were quite uneventful. As one of the more intelligent roommates, she kept the bickering to a minimum. We did see her go on a few dates, but she wasn’t known to kiss and tell.

Memorable moment: Kameelah threatened to “knock out” Elka during a heated argument at the daycare they were working at.

Life after The Real World: Kameelah is reportedly a doctor in New York.

SYRUS YARBROUGH, BOSTON 1997

Two words to describe Syrus – ladies man. His roommates would classify him more as a man whore, bringing in all types of females to “keep company”.

Memorable moment: Syrus continues dating the mother of one of the children at the daycare after the director asks him to end the relationship. He and Kameelah frequently disagreed over his choice in women.

Life after The Real World: Syrus was a fierce competitor in a few of the challenges. He is now an actor, even making a cameo appearance in Eminem’s “Without Me” music video.

STEPHEN WILLIAMS, SEATTLE 1998

Stephen is undoubtedly one of the most memorable, yet disliked Real World cast members. His skewed opinions on women and life in general often left viewers with several “WTF” moments.

Memorable Moment: Smacking Irene for calling him homosexual.

Life after The Real World: Stephen finally came out in 2008.

TECK HOLMES, HAWAII 1999

Teck is one of the most free-spirited Black roommates to enter The Real World. You’d think he was a nudist by all of the times the network had to blur out his junk. Teck was the ladies man in Hawaii, known for his many hook ups all while looking to become “the next big thing”.

Memorable Moment: Anytime he was naked.

Life after The Real WorldTeck is now an actor.

DAVID BROOM, NEW ORLEANS 2000

David was definitely in tune with his sexy. Because of his charm and style, David is one of the more promiscuous roommates. He spent time working on his music and maintaining a perfect grade point average in school.

Memorable Moment: “Sweee da da da dee dee, da de deee, come on be my baby tonight.” Who could forget David’s scatting and side-singing. He finally proved his vocal talents to his roommates by singing the National Anthem before a minor league hockey game, bringing Melissa to tears.

Life after The Real World: David is now a YouTube sensation under the name Tokyo Niyeli known for “buttering biscuits, along with other culinary feats..

MALIK COOPER, BACK TO NEW YORK 2001

An activist in his own right, Malik was all about staying in tune with his Black roots. As a biracial man, he leaned toward spreading the message about the Black struggle.

Memorable Moment: Coral and Nicole checking him about his pro-Black image while dating white women.

Life after the Real World: According to Facebook, Malik went to UC Berkeley and now works in Oakland.

CORAL SMITH, BACK TO NEW YORK 2001

Dubbed early on as the “angry Black woman”, Coral is notably one of the most outspoken cast members of The Real World. She butted heads with Mike on several occasions and would give her opinion, even when it wasn’t warranted.

Memorable Moment: Epic blowouts between Mike because of his lack of Black knowledge.

Life after The Real World: Coral participated in several of the challenges, leaving a bitter taste in the mouths of other contestants. Coral did a bit of modeling and became a new mom in 2013.

NICOLE MITSCH, BACK TO NEW YORK 2001

Nicole, also biracial is very prideful of her Black heritage. With a very meek spirit, Nicole was open about her humble beginnings with government assistance, which struck an instant friendship with Coral.

Memorable Moment: When her boyfriend comes to visit, Nicole has a little too much to drink and gets too sick for them to do the wild thang.

Life after The Real World: Nicole got a Masters from NYU and is a Yoga instructorin New York.

THEO GANTT III, CHICAGO  2002

The sweetheart of the house, Theo often portrayed a good boy image while still having a good time in Chi-Town. Because of his religious convictions, he is often uncomfortable with Aneesa and Chris’s openly gay lifestyles.

Memorable Moment: Theo lashing out at Tonya over her hypochondriac tendencies.

Life after The Real World: His post show activity includes The Gauntlet and Battle of the Sexes. Theo is a family guy these days, now married with children.

ANESSA FERREIRA, CHICAGO 2002

The queen of hookups, Aneesa broke Theo’s heart out the gate when she disclosed her sexual orientation. We saw her more naked than not, as she was extremely confident in her body. Loud and often stubborn, Aneesa found herself in a war of words with the other roommates and her mom because of her messy habits.

Memorable Moments: Her steamy hookups.

Life after The Real World: Aneesa continues to flex her muscles for MTV, recently participating in The Challenge: Free Agents. According to Twitter, she continues making appearances and is a student.

IRULAN WILSON, LAS VEGAS 2002-2003

Alton’s better half. Irulan kept the drama going with her love triangle involving Alton, and her back home boo Gabe.

Memorable Moment: Her emotional breakdown when Gabe finally broke things off.

Life after The Real World: Alton and Irulan lasted a few years after the show was over, both participating in challenges. She showcased her acting skills in the 2005 TV movie Scorned and in the 2007 film Young Cesar. These days Irulan is a photographer living in New York without Alton.

ALTON WILLIAMS, LAS VEGAS 2002-2003

Irulan’s boo thang. If he wasn’t getting down with Irulan, he always kept a lady on his arm. Often uncomfortable with homosexuality, the Vegas lifestyle was sometimes too much for him to handle.

Memorable Moment: The threesome with two Australian chicks during vacation.

Life after The Real World: After participating in a few challenges (winning The Gauntlet 2) and splitting from Irulan, he is said to be a radio host.

ARISSA HILL, LAS VEGAS 2002-2003

Often obnoxious, Arissa was known for checking her roommates at the front door. She served up the dramatics be it with her relationship or problems back home. She was tough but could be a softy at times.

Memorable Moment: The club fight that almost cost her, her job.

Life after The Real World: Arissa competed in The Challenge and literally bared all in Playboy’s Girls of Reality TV. Keep up with her on Twitter and her food blog as she details her latest goal of filming a cooking show.

ADAM KING, PARIS 2003

Adam kept the musical genes going as the son of a member of The Commodores. He spent much of his time working on his rap music. Love didn’t always love him back. Adam chased after Mallory and a few other ladies who didn’t quite feel the same.

Memorable Moment: When he didn’t have CT’s back in the heated bar fight.

Life after The Real World: Adam competed in a few challenges. According toTwitter he’s a writer and frequent traveler.

JACQUESE SMITH, SAN DIEGO 2004

The all-around good guy of the house. Unlike the other 20-somethings to come through the show, Jacquese was responsible and down to earth.

Memorable Moment: Confronting Robin after she uses the “N” word.

Life after The Real World: Jacquese was a contestant on Battle of the Sexes 2.

SHAVONDA BILLINGSLEA, PHILADELPHIA 2004-2005

A party girl in her own right, Shavonda was often a hot mess struggling to keep her life together.

Life after The Real World: Shavonda is a newlywed and a mother. She is a frequentvlogger, posting about her life and beauty products.

KARAMO BROWN, PHILADELPHIA 2004-2005

A good guy that tried his best to avoid confrontation with the rest of the house. Karamo kept his sexuality under wraps when he first arrived, in fear of judgement from the other guys.

Memorable Moment: Karamo is suspected of having a weapon at a bar.

Life after The Real World: Karamo is a host for OWN. He is also single father and recently opened up about his struggles of raising children, alone as a gay man.
