serious question? i hear people saying that nappy hair is when some one does not comb, brush and take hair of their hair properly. Then i hear other people saying that it is when some ones hair is coarse and kinky, even though they might have combed or brushed it?... and then i hear that only black people can have nappy hair..  but then i see osama bin ladens hair (devil rest his soul) his hair is coarser then mine or just as coarse and he is not black..Confused and i see alot of jewish people with coarse hair or coarser hair than some blacks.. so what really is nappy hair and does it only apply with blacks? Thanks answers are well appreciated

I think most people use the word nappy exclusively for 4 type hair. Some people will only say it's nappy if it's unkempt, but others call it nappy regardless. It depends on the person. The word nappy developed such a negative stigma that a lot of people view it as derrogatory. Because of that it sounds bad to me, so now I just say kinky to refer to all 4 type hair.

I really think it depends on the context but it's hair that tightly curled that tends to tangle easily.  IA that a lot of people use it to refer to type 4 hair or even type 3b or 3c depending on how they perceive coily hair.  There are White girls calling their hair nappy these days though.

here are some definitions:

  • A term for afro-textured hair. It originated from the transatlantic slave trade era. Some natural heads have started ‘claiming back’ the term for modern day use while others still find it offensive.

of a black person's hair) Frizzy

Tightly coiled / curled unaltered hair. Coiled hair in its natural state
as found on people of African descent who do not chemically alter their hair texture.
Hair distinctive to some Africans and Americans of African descent. If taken care of properly, it is very beautiful, thick, and soft. And people actually DO wash natural, nappy hair.
She is so brave to wear her nappy hair, unlike all those girls with jacked-up weave.

From my experience, it's a subjective term.  My family used it to mean short, dry unkempt looking hair that was either REALLY tight textured but unhealthy relaxed hair was also described as nappy.  they also used it interchangeably with "knotty".  Some people describe any texture that is or is similar to something found on black people as nappy.

Did you mean If nappy hair and non nappy hair were in a line up, you wouldn't be able to differentiate?
