this may sound weird but i've heard that an itchy scalp means your hair is growing. is that true?

In the case of some people, including myself, it could mean this. But sometimes people's scalp itches due to irritation or a dry scalp which coincides with dandruff.

It can mean a number of things.  They can include growing, irritation, dirty, dandruff, dry, too much product, etc.  It really depends on what else you are experiencing with the itchy scalp.  If you are experiencing a lot of shedding or you scalp is red or irritated looking, then that's not growth.  Also, how long the itching lasts and how intense it is are factors.

I think that an itchy scalp can also mean a dry scalp. Like  with dry skin.. dry skin itches and needs moisture.
Your scalp might also itch after using harsh irritating shampoo's or products.

I agree with Tennsley, all things should be considered.  For example, I am very watchful over my scalp's reaction whenever I start using a new product because itching may not be a sign of growth but of an allegic reaction to something in that product.  But on the norm, I take all things into account before forming an analysis, as well as just knowing my hair.
