I love wearing a bun,  plus thats all I have time to do, plus in doing so I use less products. Its pretty boring to me now, i really want to get a texturizer so I can just wake up and go with nice curly hair!

I never knew that this was a good protective style. I use to wear my hair in a bun all the time when it was longer, and had no idea that it was helping me to grow my hair. If anything my sisters always kept telling me that pulling my hair up in a bun would make my hair break off, and I needed to let it hang or wear it down more. I learn something new everyday from this site. Thanks girls! *rushes to go put hair in a bun, lol*

A bun is a protective style. You are protecting your hair from bad stuff, so you are seeing the benefits. Smile

I've worn a bun for  the past few years, myself. I love it.

I don't know 'cause this was the same issue I had faced earlier when I had first cut my hair to about neck length and I had stopped wearing buns. Now my hair is shoulder length reaching APL. I think you can achieve a decent bun with at least SL hair.

Probably by the time you are at shoulder length you can make one of those donut buns or sock buns with the "thingy" in the middle of your hair and when you are at least BSL you can make a bun with only your hair.

catredtip....My hair is just at shoulder length but my hair is very thin so my bun is tiny.  I think doing a successful bun is a combination of length and thickness.  I tried the sock bun but there's not enough of my hair to cover it so I'm sticking to the phony ones until I can grow my hair a bit longer.

To make my bun I use a phonie pony and just wrap it around itself and stick it with hair pins. It comes out great. I too have hair anorexia and would not dare wear it by itself( my hair is now neck length). I had also gotten one of the already made buns. It was good for about a day, but then started to unravel on me. So I'm going to stick to what works for me, My phonie pony.LOL
