Valentine's team was contacted by another company based in the U.S. for assistance over "anomalous activity" it noticed in records of employees logging remotely into the company's IT system.

If he had VPN access it would not have been under investigation as anomalous activity. It would have been norm for employees to log in remotely.

He worked in the office and not at home and was lazy and still fooled them a bit under watchful eye. Madness They need a new IT team.

he should have had hem write the code completely off line

even if he had to rekey it or upload the files to his work computer

what I don't understand is why he came into the office at all and didn't work from home with his VPN access

why use the company network for your surfing when you could get use a $200 tablet and your smartphone

even if they were programming for an application like SAP ... he could have afforded to buy an instance and have his outsource team, develop on that and migrate the code to his work systems

could've done this with a few jobs ... a lot contractors in IT have several contracts at a time

logging in remotely from hometown, USA is not the same as from obscuretown, China

logging in remotely at all while you are logged in on site is also a red flag

Skimmed but I don't see how this is any worse than bosses who get interns to do all their work for no pay, then get a fresh batch of new interns when the old ones start demanding money. Guy in OP should just start his own business.
