If it doesn't feel better somethings wrong 
Try starting with the condom and then having him take it off. You should definitely feel the difference then.
*disclaimer* make sure all major health test are passed, that your birthcontrol is accurate and current, and that he does not have a history of ugly people or mental illness in his family

The only difference is if the man isn't as hard with the condom on, but that is not the condom's fault. Other than that, there is no difference to me either. Before the IUD, we alternated between the pill and condoms every year.
