I mean are there people in this world, or in this country, who get to live oblivious to racism in any way, shape or fashion? Are there people who it affects so little that they don't even really understand what it is? Are there people of any race who neither negatively or positively affected by racism?
I was in a conversation with some classmates where I did very little talking but they felt (like they always do) the need to talk race and the stuff coming out of their mouths was so incredibly ignorant I was stunned. They said everything from, "Not to sound racist but..." to "if we don't talk about this country's racist past, history could repeat itself."
So I was discussing with some family members whether or not racism affects every one. Moms says affects means influences and hell yes. Husband says that everyone is either racist or negatively effected by racism. I don't know what I say. Especially when I hear black folks talking about picking yourself up by your bootstraps and not using racism as an excuse not to succeed.
In all honestly sometimes on here I hear things about certain blacks with no consideration to the role that systemic oppression/racism has played in their journey or how deep a pit they would have to climb out of to reach what some would call successful. It makes me wonder if some blacks even get lucky and start out on the same level of the totem pole as some whites and therefore not being affected by racism.
