Topic: Male reactions to natural hair! Posted: Sep 30 2007 at 12:08am |
|
I tend to compliment women with natural hair, because quite often their hair appears healthier and more pretty than women with relaxed hair (and I'll include my relaxed hair in that), and I'm all about giving credit where credit is due. :~}
I was truly surprised with how many of my male friends immediately said ewww, when i told them i was going natural. One even told me that he didn't like natural girls because "relaxers are conditioners and natural girls never condition or take care of their hair". I had to enlighten him to the fact that relaxers aren't conditioners. lol crazy, right?
In the different places I've lived I've noticed that natural women get different types of attention. In Louisiana, relaxed was it, if you were natural everyone was asking why and when you were going to relax. In North Florida it seemed like natural women were viewed as kind of exotic and sought after (and I'll specify most of the reactions I saw were on college campuses or at collegiate functions so that may have something to do with it), and it seems sometimes that the farther north you get the more it's just taken for granted some girls are natural and some aren't.

I get less attention now that I am natural but I kinda like that. It's crazy because a lot of times guys will compliment my hair and say I look good with it but they won't ask for the digits but thats fine with me because I kinda like a little less attention( Not trying to sound conceited at all!!) I really think it helps me be a little bit more aggressive because I will see a nice looking man and if he looks at me or compliments me but won't go in for the kill I take the initiative to either catch his attention or I try to give an extra push to get him to ask me for my number. I know thats kind of crazy but its working for my social skills.

awww mstoya i didn't know you in the 'urea' . i think it has a lot to do with where you're at though because you're right I was looked past when i was relaxed unless it was super long and now that i'm natural i get more attention even if it's just to ask a question or a simple smile like 'welcome to the nappy side' lol. but here every 5th person you meet seems to be in twist or braids or dreads or something

I'm glad this was bumped up so I can put in my extra two cents... It seems as my hair grows out I'm getting not more attention but more guys asking me 'what's in your hair' ; always assuming I've texturized it or a curly perm or something. Random chica's ask me this as well. But nothing really negative, I live in the DC area and there are a lot of naturals here so I guess it's common place.
As for the guy I had started seeing he 'decided' a a week or so ago that he liked my hair 'short or really long (based on old pics), but not in between' WTH??? Needless to say he's been cut back considerably...how about 'i like you'?? Why so much focus on my apperance? Whatever...boys can be so shallow.

When I first went natural I noticed that I didn't get as much attention from men. I have noticed that as my hair has gotten longer it has increased. Most guys don't approach me but I do get a lot of looks of admiration.
I was at work one day, sitting at my desk minding my own business when I looked up and noticed two office supply delivery guys falling over themselves looking at me as they were leaving. I had to chuckle to myself because they looked so funny. It was as if they had never seen a woman with natural hair before.
I also get more attention from white men which is new for me.

When my hair was texturized a little looser curl, I would get compliments from complete strangers (guys) on my hair. Now my hair is around a 4a with a tighter curl and I get more compliments from women - go figure!

When i stayed in houston I didnt get as much attention as i do NOW staying in atlanta. Men LOVE the natural look. Im not all neo-soul, but men have told me that they just like the look because i look clean and fresh beauty, You know natural beauty. They say that they get tired of the weave ,makeup, fake nails, you know all that and its just refreshing to see someonoe naturally pretty.
And also they try and holla with ANY hairstyle, even the nappy un combed fro, lol

This an interesting topic. Men's compliments frustrate me. I get more compliments when I'm wearing a curl defining product in my hair, versus wearing my hair less defined, which looks kinkier. I also get more compliments when my hair is flat-ironed. It just pisses me off, because I'm the same person, I don't look that different, and all of a sudden, if I have curls, or apl straight hair, I'm "beautiful." It's the curls more than the straight hair. And that makes me upset. It's like I get an extra 20 beauty points for the curls...Sigh...let me stop before I get mad...
