Be honest. Lying by omission is still lying.
Don't do it as a good look. Actually be ready/willing to work, not show up just to say you did/tried it.
Don't come to sessions to argue in front of an audience.
Follow up with homework and reinforcing positive/productive behavior when not in session.
Don't try to get consigns on everything you say.
Be as quick to point out your own faults and your responsibility for them as you are with your partner.

Just sayin.

I work in the counseling field and always recommend premarital/relationship counseling.

Every one, no matter his/her background, has ba ge they carry around that has accumulated from past relationships, experiences, childhood, etc. It's vital to the success of a relationship that two individuals release some of that ba ge, learn how to communicate, clarify any (potential) conflict, and be on the same page prior to starting a relationship.

Starting the relationship off on the right foot, before any problems arise.

Yes and it was the best thing that we could have done. I had been thinking for many years that our relationship was perfect and things were going by the list of "things" we wanted to do in order and I was happy as shyt. Come to find out I was wrong we were not perfect and that list was MY list that I hadn't even noticed she was rolling her eyes at my list. I learned that although I had grown with my narcissistic behavior that I hadn't grown as much as I thought I had.

I was willing to jump ship I was hurt and angry and felt like I didn't know the person I was in love with. I was/am dramatic and just because she wasn't ready for ONE thing that I thought we were ready for I felt lied to and betrayed. In the end it was both of us, me not recognizing her hesitation and her pacifying me thinking she could keep putting things off. We made it through and that "thing" I wanted so badly was just the idea of what it would be like, the magicalness of it all. My relationship is perfect because it's not perfect and I'm cool with that... NOW.
