Topic: How long do you wear your unit at one time? Posted: Feb 26 2013 at 4:38am |
I usually wear mine for a max of 5 days before I remove it. I give my head a break overnight and then reapply. I do retouch the edges everynight with a drop of glue here and there .. otherwise the hairline would start to look fake and odd. I use tape to actually get the unit on and the tape would definitely keep it on for 2- 3 weeks at least I am sure ... but the thing is, your own hair starts to get funky and/or the unit starts to get funky somewhere within that first week so when you turn your head quickly ... people can smell it. Outside of that I like to unit to be fresh and well moisterized so it can hang nicely and not look burdened and stiff with creams to give it moisture etc.

Mine is on 24/7, except for when I wash it once per week or every two weeks. The first adhesive I tried luckily had no adverse reactions to my skin and holds for about 4-5 weeks with no lifting. The only products I use are the shampoo, conditioner and a little olive oil for the ends, and I don't use any type of heat at all. As it seems, I always get great hair when purchasing and that's all they need. I have is one that is 2 years old, which I now use as my backup and she was worn 24/7 for almost a year.
| What were you using to adhere for so long? For me I can go for about 3 days before I'm annoyed. I don't like sleeping with them on.

I am about to order my first unit and had a QT. I just assumed everyone takes there wig off at the end of the night... Is that not the case? Do you go days wearing it? Do you sleep in it etc...? Maybe this is a silly question, I just have no idea what to expect and how long it will hold up while wearing it. |
I use the tape method. I always have a comb at the nape of the neck for all of my lace wigs & most of them have combs in the front too. I only use the tape to make the hairline/front of the wig stay down. I only put a strip of tape that is about 3 inches long at the front. I keep my wig on for 2 days & really no longer than that at all. It gets annoying sleeping with a full lace wig. Especially with a head tie on top. & My scalp gets dry & itchy very quickly!!! So imagine how uncomfortable it is to not get to my scalp for a quick scratch lol. The longest I've kept a wig on was for about 9 days because I was in Florida for vacation & wanted to keep my hair quick & easy.

I use patricia nimocks clear acrylic sealer - 2 light coats of it. The very first unit I purchased was from an AV and I think the shedding for me was using a curling iron and it wasn't virgin hair. The rest have been virgin and no heat is used. I usually get natural straight but if I want it curly I just dampen it using a sock bun and in the morning I have nice soft curls.

Prairieflower - just curious..what are you using to seal the knots, if anything? I think I could hold onto my units longer if I can keep the shedding down.

I take mine off as soon as I get home. I wouldn't say daily since I am not always out of the house daily. My hair has definitely improved since I started using the tootsie method.

Definitely try the elastic band method (Tootsie's Mom) and the Got2Be.. you might not need the gel, it depends on the exact shape of your head and the wig cap - even with the measurements, those 5 numbers don't describe the shape of the cap perfectly, so it may or may not be secure enough in the front edge with just the band (I find wigs that i ordered custom with the same measurements fit differently) But the GOt2Be gel is pretty great. I can't use it every day - my skin sometimes reacts to it - so I use tape a lot, but only temple to temple. I use blue liner, which is supposed to be a long wear tape but I have no problem using it daily, it comes off easily for me. But I think its a good idea to start off with easy, and see if you need the extra security of glue or tape. You might not.
| Thank you! I unit should arrive on Tuesday I picked up some of the Got2be Ultra and will try that first. Just in case... what brand and where do you get your tape and blue liner? Thanks a ton!!
