yes, its rude.
people have allergies. live in places where pets aren't allowed. or don't want pets there. or theyre scared of dogs. or they don't want a chimp ripping off their face. is it so wrong for a heads up?
the only way I could see it not being rude is if the person had a service animal...and more than likely you would know that the person had one before they came over.

under 12 lbs
yes its rude to bring a 15 + lb dog
if its small
its not trained? yea
you have to lay the rules down
.... no drinking in my cups or glasses, etc
no barking at me in my house, etc

But that is more than rude.
BTW,
generally it is a guest and their guest. That is a known rule. If there
are more you have to let people know and you should offer to get a
hotel.
If you want to bring a bestie, a side piece, your drug
man, your makeup artist, your inlaws, your child's bestie, you need to
ask and discuss if you aren't shot down from asking.
BTW, I bring my dog to my job on very rare occasions.

Oh and the above is for a quick visit. If it's a long visit somewhere, I just take my dog and get a hotel. I like my space.

If it's a friend that I know loves my dog, then I take him. If I'm unsure of if they like dogs, I ask beforehand. If I know they hate dogs, I bring him anyways(jk I leave him with one of only 3 people I trust with my dog).

If i'm traveling to see family they are aware of everyone in my party. I would never show up with a guest, animal or human, without notifying the host period.
