Hi Tongue

My 5yr old daughter has 4b shoulder length hair that is very thick and coarse. I normally wash her hair 1x/week or every 2wks and then put in braids for the week. The problem with her hair is that it gets very fuzzy in a weeks time ( I do put a silk bonnet on her at night).
I can't stand for her hair to look unkempt, so I take it down and rebraid weekly.

I'm wondering if this is too much manipulation for her hair?  I'm trying to leave it alone to allow it to gain more length. Is this regimen defeating the purpose? For her to get the benefit of more growth, should it be left braided for a longer period of time?

I need help with this, as I'm at a loss as to whether is more damaging than good.

ALSO.... can anyone recommend a GOOD moisturizing daily leave-in for 4b hair w/o mineral oil or petro?  I've heard a LOT about shea butter. Is is good and what are the benefits?

Sorry for all the questionsEmbarrassed

Thanks~~~

It doesn't sound like too much manipulation. How are you detangling her hair?

Thanx, Testsuko for ur response Smile...... I use Sofn'free Olive Oil detangler for kids to detangle after washing. I spray it on and comb thru w/ a wide tooth shower comb. It's pretty good and detangles w/o a problem.

I desperately need a good moisturizer for her hair.  It's just soooo dry. When I have it braided, I'll spray it daily w/ a spritz bottle of water and conditioner, but it doesn't seem to help at all.
I'm at a loss of what way to go next.

Have you tried using an oil to seal in the moisture? While it's wet or still damp, slick some oil over the braids, especially the ends, but not the scalp.

I have a mixture of EVOO, avocado and castor oil that I apply sparingly to her hair every other day.  I heard good things about pure Shea Butter for moisture, so I'm going to try that and see what happens.

Thanx~~
