The day I side with big tobacco...lol.

I still remember cartoon Joe Camel ads on TV and in magazines.

Good for this family and those fighting tobacco companies.

Big Tobacco did win a ruling last year about the proposed  FDA graphic labels .  These are examples of what the FDA wanted.

The New York Times
November 8, 2011
U.S. Food and Drug Administration, via Associated Press

A judge  blocked a federal requirement that would have forced tobacco companies to include graphic images such as these on cigarette packages to show the dangers of smoking.

I think I still was in elementary school in 96...but were they linking lung cancer to cigarette smoking then?

I don't see how anyone could sue a tobacco company for getting cancer now. You know what risk you're taking..
actually it was only up until recently when legislation changed to highlight the dangers of smoking on packaging less than ten years ago I think

Most people didn't know that

Furthermore cigarettes were initially marketed as having health benefits and the older generation will tell you how cigarettes were given out with rations during the world war etc etc

It's mighty presumptuous and minimising to state that you know what risk you are taking on a case that is more than a few years old which has only just been ruled upon

Class action suits are not overnight

Respectfully taken of course.

But..it's presumptuous and minimizing to state NOW, as in the year 2014, that people don't know what risk they're taking when they smoke cigarettes? Maybe that was missed in my original post, but that's what I was referring to.

Smoking is awful. Not saying anything different. Just surprising that someone sued a tobacco company for getting cancer. 96 didn't seem that long ago to me.

I really don't understand , how can anyone not know cigarette is bad,, add to the fact , the guy was a chain smoker. And I am pretty sure his doctor advised him to quit , we all have choices in our lives, whether they are good or bad,,

Right!

I always wonder if more smokers can sue? Many had no clue when they started that it was so darn addictive and when they found out, it was too late. The damage was done and the addiction was strong.Ouch
