you don't think sh*tty teachers play a part? at all?

unfortunately, there are sh*tty teachers out there who do not have best practices. a bad teacher can directly result in bad grades, and a lack of knowledge on a subject. yes, if a child is motivated, they can learn and do things on their own, but they would not have that support they need. and really, that intrinsic motivation would come at a later age, and not in those crucial younger years.
i could see some teachers being azzholes about their grades, esp. in HS
on the flip side, I could also see some teachers simply passing children b/c they know what is at stake. so the child would have the grade to keep benefits for the family, but not actually know the knowledge.
i could see pressure from admin to give certain students (athletes) who are on assistance good grades to not only keep playing but receive benefits for the family.
I can also see some upset parents storming the school and confronting teachers about grades.
It's a bad position to put teachers in as well.
