Sorry to hear that Natalee, protein does sound like your best bet but remember to use some moisture the worst thing now would be to get protein overload so balance it.
How exactly does it feel, like brittle, straw, limp etc?

Okay.. on second check, it's still lowpo which is confusing me. I did a strand test (for 10 mins), and they all floated, no oil added in the last 24 hours. The texture is a lot more rough and abrasive, like a brillo pad for lack of a better description. The front straightens easier, but once wet, everything gives off that burnt hair smell, which may mean that I have the flat iron temp too high.
I wanted to flat iron again this week, but the threat of damage is too high, and I don't feel comfortable using a heat device for right now.
Moisture and DC's will be used frequently this week, and hopefully, my hair can begin feeling familiar again.

Could te fact that I cowashed last night and left it semi saturated with condish be blocking the water from coming in?
Let it be known though, that my hair was completely dried by the time I did the strand test.

I know how you feel :)
I gave up combs & detangling tools awhile back, i cant stand a comb lol the last time i detangled with one was Sept 2012. Heres some tips that helped me & I continue to do:
-I braid the roots of my hair to keep the tangles away. I have 48 in my hair as I speak. I act as it im about to actually braid my hair, & braid maybe 1/4 to 1/2 inch down then STOP. This method also helps me when I start finger detangling, because my hair is already sectioned. The more "sections" (up to 50) the more detangled my hair is
-I do NOT detangle on conditioner/water soaked hair, thats just asking for knots & breakage especially for mine which is more so on the fine side. I may dampen it just a little with a mist of water w/ maybe 5 pumps of conditioner & 1 tbsp of oil (just a few sprays) & then use a dab of my crisco/coconut oil cream for slip. I put the cream on the ends first, & start detangling that way. Once the ends are free & slippery it makes detangling up the shaft easier.
-Sometimes I may even use the blowdryer BUT on high speed using COOL AIR while doing the "tension method"
-And ofcourse, I do my best to keep my hair in stretched styles
-Before I start to finger detangle, it helps me sometimes to mist a little w/ the spray I mentioned earlier & put my hair in about 6 big bantu knots for maybe 30-45mins, this stretches the hair a little more & makes it a TON easier to finger detangle.

HTH!! :)

I band my braids together to keep them from unraviling in the water Like, I use 6 braids to wash in & I band the ends of 3 together. Banding like those who use it to stretch the hair.but I only band down 1/2 inch at the ends

Mane 'n Tail detangler!
This will save your life. It doesn't leave my hair oily or greasy personally and it's just a spritz so there's no long process (perfect if your're feeling lazy)
You can check out some videos on youtube for additional information.
Personally I don't think i'll be changing from this detangler.

My only suggestion would be that if you must use heat, try to flat iron only once/month and WRAP, scarf, satin bonnet nightly with plenty of oil to preserve set the whole month if possible.
