Topic: Think I'm gonna start heat training... help? Posted: Feb 26 2013 at 12:37am |

Detangling is the b-tch that strikes back with a vengeance. Once you ignore your hair, it swears to curse your free time to struggling with the comb until you learn not to mess with her. Like, I swear, I spent one week in Florida, and then have to come home to this sh-t. It's kinda sorta stressing me out. And to be honest, I'm open to dealing with it because it feels like I'm being forced to pursue heat training for a break. I'm open to both detangling tips (my hair is a nest right now. Curse this damn tendency to curl up into one another until these damn knots take over.) Hell, even finger detangling tips, because I have somewhat of a bit of patience, and am willing to rest and start over once I have calmed. And also, I am willing to accept heat training tips, because een though I said I don't really want to do it, I kinda still do, because I foresee this being a problem once more in the future, and besides, heat training does sound fun. Like, an alternate route that makes me have somewhat the best of both worlds. Curls and coils and dare I say, naps, while still being able to blowdry and flat iron easily.

Also, I know this isn't the appropriate section, but I am preparing for my first job interview at a clothing store (first job interview in general, really) and would like some tips, because the more I look into it, the more I psych myself out. :s

Hey hun, You sound like me on a bad detangling day lol I can relate a little except my hair isn't long as yours yet . The only thing that has been working for me and keep the knots and detangling down is detangling on dey hair with cocontu oil prior to washing my hair, post wash I put a leave in and oil on the hair then set my hair on perm rods to dry most of it. It's mostly damp when I take it down (I only leave them in 10-15mins) then apply my shea butter and style or whatever I'm planning on doing. My hair stays moistured and stretches to it's maximum in about 2 days. I couldn't help with the heat training part but there are load of great youtube vids on it I'm sure Jobs? I know it's get old saying this but be yourself. In a department store they expect your turn up on time, go out your way for customers, and just upsell but they make it sound all hard on paper. Trust me, just flash your million dollar smile and answer the questions, you'll do fine girly. Best of Luck!! eta: If your already had the interview then hope you did yourself proud! I've been a few jobs like that so I have an idea where your coming from.

i decided 2 years ago that finger detangling was where i drew the line. i tried it and was like if this is what will keep me from having my goal length then it ends here. call me lazy, not motivated, not down with the cause, whatever...im just not doing it. im pretty good at looking at styling tools and telling whether or not they will snatch me bald so i never even tried things like the denman brush or the tangle teezer. after trial and error, what works for me right now is that i only detangle on wash day. the only styling tool i use is the magic star jumbo rake comb 5660 (saved my hair life). i detangle before the wash during the deep conditioning or prepoo phase and after the wash/conditioning phase. i put my hair in twists and let them dry for a few days and then style. during the week i will remove some shed hair while styling as needed but i dont comb it again until the next wash cycle. hope you find something that works for you

I have been a heat straightened natural before(and am currently transitioning back) and it has its pros and cons. You do not have to permanently loosen your curl to get the benefits of using heat regularly.
I would work on getting rid of your detangling issue before adding heat to the mix.
Do you deep condition? with what and how long? When you detangle do you also remove shed hair? Have you trimmed your ends recently?

agreed agreed agreed\
heat can be a good addition to a regimen when used appropriately. i grew my hair from EL to BSL full (except for my resistent, tangly crown section. argh!) in the span of a year and a half all while using heat on a weekly basis. My hair was full and thick, shiny, had body, etc. I quit using heat though because my crown was suffering. i'm still learning that even though my hair now has been thoroughly rid of all the parts that had been exposed to heat, my crown still requires quite different care from the rest of my hair. It has been thriving since i've stopped using heat on it, but in general, i was quite content with heat use for my hair. so just experiment. if you're doing it properly, you should not get excessive breakage and splitting. maybe a little bit more than you would with straight virgin, natural hair that hasn't seen heat, but only reasonably more so. the key here is moderation.

i slather my hair with conditioner, detangle in small sections and twist. then rinse the conditioner out or the twist and let them dry. If in between styles i mix conditioner, water, olive oil , and castor oil in a spray bottle, and use that to detangle. First i use my finger to pull my hair apart, then i go back through it with a wide tooth comb, afro comb, or my denman brush

Omagahh you guys! Thanks for the support and tips! Okay, so I got the detangling issue fixed by using handsoa (yes, the actual bar) and lots of oil and conditioner. Made them tangles slip right out, except for a few trouble spots. Eventually, I emerged oily, but tangle free, and that made my night. Then I twisted into small twists, and wore that for two days before washing and straightening. I am still considering heat training, but not so much because I am less frustrated. Eventually, I do believe I will heat train, but not right now, as my ends are going through some thangs. Even when I cut, they're still rough, but not visibly damaged. And they're the most difficult to straighten. I don't know what's up. I don't deep condition regularly anymore, because I am lazy. Furthermore, my hair likes to untwist from the little twists when conditioned and then tangle. :/ I usually pin then, but like I said, I am lazy. I don't regularly heat style, but I'm scared to heat train because I notice more tangles at the uttermost ends and occasionally the roots too (could be attributed to sweat) and so I'm like, what's the point if it's tangles I want to avoid? I add moisture mostly when I am in a PS because I can do that, and still maintain my style. Right now, I'm looking into wearing it curly (like, in a gelled down state, but loose) and would like to also thicken it up and address my ends before I will heat train. I am still MBL, but layered a little (maybe an inch or two difference between all the layers) and would like to be full MBL or perhaps, waist before heat training becomes an option. Also, I want more experience with heat styling and such.

(Sorry, didn't see the questions) I dc occasionally, but on the rarely side. I use regular conditioner. I do remove shed hair when I detangle. And yes, I just trimmed my ends.
I just mastered straightening my hair properly, but my ends wont co-operate as much as my roots do -.-" Maybe I need to PS until I pass MBL and waist, then do another big trim

Update: So I guess I inadvertently got it heat trained. :/ My strands feel different, and I noticed that I am either high porosity (more likely) or medium, and not extremely low like I was before. I don't know what is going on, but I feel as if my hair has been permanently damaged since that trip to the salon and then the two times after that I chose to flat iron. Well, since the damage has been done, I think I'll need more protein in my life, and perhaps, I'll even continue to heat train the new growth, even if only for the purpose of matching the rest of my hair. I'm kinda :/ about the situation because lowpo hair is healthiest, and my hair was def. healthy before, but now, it feels like I need to cut the majority of my hair just to get it to feel normal and healthy again. -.-" This isn't quite a setback (haven't lost any hair except for that trim, and last half of that one detangling session) but it sure as hell feels like it (or at least, that's what my current emotions would have you believe).
