What was it about the fresh prince of bel air, a show about an extremely well off black family on the posher side of America, that made it such a success across all colour and religious lines? It wasn't as if the show didn't straddle controversy, it often stroked volatile issues such as drugs race racism, blackcism, issues that are often polarising by gender race religion or socioeconomic status, yet it is still loved by most from long beach to Kyoto?

Will got the juice. I just rewatched Bad Boys last week and did some research on it, it was one of the first big blockbusters with two black leads. It wasn't seen as a black film, just an action flick. Will just has that aura about him that everybody likes and can relate too.

I was going to say Will Smith but then I thought about Family Matters which didn't have Will yet had universal appeal. In fact I think remember hearing that Family Matters is the longest running African American series in U.S. history.

Fresh Prince of Bel Air has amazing shelf life

When I was younger, I actually preferred Family Matters over Fresh Prince. Now, I can't even watch a full episode of FM

I guess it appealed to my youth whereas FP has timeless themes

I had to google....didn't realize it was on for 9 seasons.
The Cosby Show was 8 seasons.

excellent production combined with will smith, the 90s was a black mecha of quality black tv shows. a different world, roc, in living color, living single, martin, hanging with mr cooper, etc. every network has tried to tap into that market.

i dont think we'll ever see that type of creativity again
