Rosa Parks had been thrown off the bus a decade earlier by the same bus driver — for refusing to pay in the front and go around to the back to board. She had avoided that driver’s bus for twelve years because she knew well the risks of angering drivers, all of whom were white and carried guns. Her own mother had been threatened with physical violence by a bus driver, in front of Parks who was a child at the time. Parks’ neighbor had been killed for his bus stand, and teenage protester Claudette Colvin, among others, had recently been badly manhandled by the police.

A Black Dominican that knew and loved being Black!
Carlos A. Cooks was born on June 23, 1913 in the Dominican Republic and died May 5th, 1966 in Harlem. During his 52 years on this planet, he passed through a phenomenal experience by spending his entire lifetime dedicated to the liberation of Africa, its universal communities, and all its peoples. This fact alone puts him among the ranks of the Hon. Marcus Garvey It was Carlos Cooks who coined the phrase “BUY BLACK” as an economic solvency in the various African Communities throughout America. It was Carlos Cooks who first formed an independent school, complete with a course in Kiswahili at a time (1954) when many of our people didn’t even know where Africa was, never mind what Swahili was. It was Carlos Cooks who first initiated the concept of natural hair as an issue of racial pride through his ANPM’s MISS NATURAL STANDARD OF BEAUTY CONTEST. A True Black Hero.

Ann Lowe: Black Fashion Designer Who Created Jacqueline Kennedy's Wedding Dress
ANN LOWE – FASHION’S BEST KEPT SECRET
 Jackie O' Wedding Dress to JFK
WHO: Ann Cole Lowe, fashion designer
THE MAJOR MOMENT: In 1953, Lowe designed Jacqueline
Kennedy Onassis' wedding dress for her marriage to John F. Kennedy. The
voluminous, off-the-shoulder dress was constructed out of 50 yards of
ivory silk taffeta. Just 10 days before the wedding ceremony a water
line broke in Lowe's New York City studio and ruined the former First
Lady's gown along with all 10 pink bridesmaids dresses. Lowe worked
tirelessly to recreate all 11 designs in time for the Rhode Island
nuptials. Sadly, Lowe did not get the credit she deserved for designing
and creating Jackie's all-important dress. Jackie is said to have told
people that her gown was made by a "colored woman dressmaker" and Lowe
was only mentioned by name in the Washington Post where fashion editor
Nine Hyde simply wrote "… the dress was designed by a Negro, Ann Lowe."
FAB FACT: Jackie O wasn't Lowe's first or only high
profile client. Lowe also designed for New York society families like
the Rockefellers and the Vanderbilts. The talented fashion designer also
created the gown that actress Olivia de Havilland wore when she
accepted the Oscar for Best Actress in 1946.
FAST FORWARD:
In the 1960's, Lowe opened Ann Lowe Originals inside the Saks Fifth Ave
department store on Madison Avenue in New York. Her amazing work still
lives on in the permanent archives at The Metropolitan Museum of Art,
the Black Fashion Museum and The Smithsonian. Lowe passed away in 1981
at the age of 83.

Library of Congress The Catholic order of the Sisters of the Holy Family in New Orleans was founded in 1842 by Henriette DeLille, a free woman of color. Born to privilege and well educated, Henriette chose a life of caring for and educating the poor over a life of ease. At the time of Henriette’s death in 1862, the order numbered 12 members. By 1909, there were 150 members operating schools in New Orleans that served 1,300 African American students, caring for orphans and the elderly, and doing missionary work in Belize. The order remains active today.

hmm..; I never heard this before.
Martin Luther King, Jr. was assassinated on friend Maya Angelou's birthday on April 4th, 1968. Angelou stopped celebrating her birthday
for many years afterward, and sent flowers to King's widow every year
until Mrs. King's death in 2006.
