The moment I started crying was after Patsy got whipped by Epps, and she was lying on the table and the women were tending to her. Everyone in the cabin was solemn. But the black men in particular had their heads bowed and rubbed their arms and faces and looked so sad and helpless, like they felt powerless and emasculated at not being able to protect her. I suppose I just didn't expect that strong a show of emotion from them. I wonder what type of effect that must have had on their psyche and self esteem not being able to protect their women. It makes me wonder if the knowledge of those events has anything to do with the way black men treat black women today.

I'm surprised you think so Sang. You're usually so dismissive.

If you have seen the movie, you should know that Epps HATED his wife. But he was never shown laying a finger on her. She was taken care of. No one would have thought to tie her to a column and whip her when she did wrong. And she had absolutely no sympathy at seeing another woman treated this way. White women and black women were treated as polar opposites. White women were considered worthy of being respected and protected while the black women were the whipping boys. I think black men today still think a black woman is not something to be cherished but many think a white woman is.

I don't think many bm think about those events when interacting with bw.  They treat us poorly cuz they weren't taught better, grew up in broken homes, have a lack of respect & empathy & a product of their sh*tty environment where such behavior is the norm.

^^PLEASE, it's short -minded thinking like the post above that perpetuates this problem. We have been in bondage in this country 8X's longer than we've been free! Even to this day, with the systemic debilitating incarceration rates, and subsequent economic inequalities, we're faced with the same problems, only a 21st century version.

To the OP, hells yes the social programming we as a people received for centuries has resulted in long lasting devastating effects in our communities. Very good observation I might add!
