Man, I have two Korean students who wanna try it with their so-called English names.  One girl says her name is Shirly.  Um, NO.  Your name is Hyuna.  A boy said his English name was Perseus.  After staring at him for a good few minutes, I just shook my head and said was going to keep calling him Hyung Jin.  The only kid that I have gone alone with calling him by his English name, 50% of the time, is a kid named Jung Hwan/Benny.  That's only because there is another kid in the same class named Young Hwan and they seem to get confused as to who I am calling on if I use Benny's Korean name.  I don't think it takes that much effort to learn how to properly pronounce someone's name.  I have to correct people on the pronunciation of my name all the time, and it's only four letters.

And depending on where in the world you are from, "Aaron" is a weird name.

I would personally rather have people butcher my name than change it.  That's just me though.

I agree with Tokyo, most people just can't be bothered to learn how to pronounce a name they are not familiar with, but they are perfectly capable of doing it.

Also, going by a nickname and legally changing your first and last name to fit into a culture that is not your own are two very different things.

I think they should go by a nickname if their name is very hard to say.  If you are Kiojfdasljfd then by all means introduce yourself as Ken.

Honestly, I don't really care what people choose to call themselves.  Just tell me what you answer to, and that's that.  It's none of my business if they choose not to go by their given name.

But why go by Ken when that's not your name? My name is not difficult, but it's easy to mispronounce. When ppl clarify incorrectly and say Is that ___________?. I correct them.

I'm not gonna battle you over pronunciation, but I'm also not gonna resort to a whitened nickname for your convenience.

I didn't and wouldn't completely change my name, but as a member of the Correcting People All My Life committee, I do shorten it for most people
