pronounced ha-o-lay and i'll be adding this to my personal dictionary and thesaurus.  According to the interwebs tho it simply means white person or foreigner.  smh.  i'm going to choose to go with the native's definition.

I think these white folks are all trying to follow in the foot steps of the first white woman to "wear" the culture of another, Liza Dalby.  The only difference is that Dalby actually did it as an anthropologist and not for some self-actualizing experience.  She was aware of how dressing up as a geisha might appear to Japanese people.  All these amateurs who are acting like Johnny-come-latelys are doing it to make themselves feel good about being white.
