C'mon yall, licking a desk was a unique punishment, but not all that terrible IMO.  The parents are teachers as well so they are just butt hurtLOL

And that kid isn't isolated from his friends.  Teachers can't tell you who to be friends with.  That's plain silly.
  REACHING!
No.

It is terrible because it crosses the line into plain humiliation, not constructive punishment like making him clean it up with a towel or sending him to the principal's office.

I told someone about this story (they had corporal punishment at school growing up in Africa) and even they agreed it was terrible. The teacher was being a bully, period so I think the parents have every right to be "butt hurt"Ermm imo.

Yes.

And what is so wrong with using humiliation as a punishment as long as it's within reason?  What's so "constructive" about making him clean it up with a towel?   Humiliation can be constructive in deterring negative behavior in this case.  Just like parents making their kids post signs on fb about their ratchet behavior.

And an African's opinion about the "terribleness" of the punishment doesn't really validate your arguement.  I grew up with corporal punishment in school and trust when I say licking a desk is painless...getting your knuckles hit with a ruler really hurts.

licking a bacteria-infested desk is not within reason.. Don't know what types of germs on that desk.. The sensible thing would have been to make him clean it up or take away his recess.. Not risk the possibility of him becoming sick..

humiliation as punishment is something that should be decided and done by parents. not teachers. period.

this teacher was way out of line. there are other methods to correct a child that is writing on a desk, such as cleaning all of the desks in the class, missing recess time, phone call home, and/or doing away with a desk completely for a period of time. moreover, it is part of a teacher's job not just to correct behavior, but model and expect the proper behavior/procedures.

what's constructive about cleaning up w/ a towel is the expectation that if you make a mistake and make a poor choice, then you will have a (reasonable) consequence that fits, and that he should expect that every time he writes on a desk, not only will he clean it up, but there will be more consequences for his actions. THAT is reasonable.

Jolie, I concur!   I wonder what next the witch was expected to do to the defenseless child.

I'm starting to love the idea of home schooling more and more. These teachers are getting out of hand!

ridiculous!

..and Tbaby, i agree with you a lot of this forum, but i bet if one of your children came home and said the teacher made him lick the desk, your response would be much different.

yes i agree with some sort of punishment, but that is disgraceful.

I agree with everything Ladybird said. well put!
