Licking the desk is a bit much and making my child do so, a desk can be cleaned but by licking it up? Now come on.

C'mon yall, licking a desk was a unique punishment, but not all that terrible IMO.  The parents are teachers as well so they are just butt hurtLOL

And that kid isn't isolated from his friends.  Teachers can't tell you who to be friends with.  That's plain silly.
 REACHING!

How is exposing someone else's child to bacteria, viruses and god knows what else is on that desk, within reason? We don't know who else's hands were all over that desk or the last time it was cleaned...and if it was cleaned it was probably cleaned with non organic products. Having a child LICK anything is disgusting. Wtf type of time warp is this? That is why there are paper towels and cleaning products.

No.

It is terrible because it crosses the line into plain humiliation, not constructive punishment like making him clean it up with a towel or sending him to the principal's office.

I told someone about this story (they had corporal punishment at school growing up in Africa) and even they agreed it was terrible. The teacher was being a bully, period so I think the parents have every right to be "butt hurt"Ermm imo.

Yes.

And what is so wrong with using humiliation as a punishment as long as it's within reason?  What's so "constructive" about making him clean it up with a towel?   Humiliation can be constructive in deterring negative behavior in this case.  Just like parents making their kids post signs on fb about their ratchet behavior.

And an African's opinion about the "terribleness" of the punishment doesn't really validate your arguement.  I grew up with corporal punishment in school and trust when I say licking a desk is painless...getting your knuckles hit with a ruler really hurts.

And there's nothing reasonable about an adult forcing a child in his care to lick a desk till he gagged either. It's a child and a human being we're talking about here, not a dog.

As a TEACHER, I find this was way beyond reason and common sense.  I don't agree with abusing ones power or using sadistic means to humiliate a child.  It's unnecessary.

If the teacher wanted to use "humiliation," all he/she would have had to do was say, "Tyrone, are you writing on the desk again?  How many times have I told you to stop writing on the desk?  You have now purchased yourself an all-expense paid trip to this classroom for a desk-cleaning fiesta during recess,"  in front of the class and that would have done just fine.
