Honesty is the best policy, IMO. If he looks bad, meh, keep it moving.
He should say that he's on a budget but "I'd love to take you out and get to know you."
If she agrees, proceed to a cost-effective, but fun, restaurant and hope that she abides. If, throughout the date, she gets something beyond his means, then he should apologize, tell her that he can't afford it, apologize, potentially take the L, and see what happens.
That's what dating is all about!

i don't disagree with what JR is saying though...especially on a first date.
although, the statement is coming from a guy who will pay bookoo bucks on sneakers. your lady is a superior investment.
