I'd wonder why he had to pay part cash and part credit/debit.  If funds are that low then going out isn't that serious ... get your cushion right

I could see combining gift cards and cash/credit/debit

Just on principle, if im ever on the market again ima go on a date and split the bill using a coupon, check, credit card, and cash. And see what she say.

cards can decline for a bunch of reasons and be back working in minutes but if it's a matter of having no money or no credit line, I'd wonder why you didn't know that before going out

and if you're cutting things that close, why are you eating out much less bringing someone else along

if you have money problems be up front on why and what's being done about it

don't make yourself penniless over dinner
