Topic: Spinoff: Why are online schools less respected? Posted: May 04 2013 at 11:57pm |
Okay, this question came to mind after a comment I saw that was made
during a "disagreement" between two BHM members....Anyway, why are
online schools not respected as much as the traditional degree from a
brick and mortar school? The comment I saw was something along the lines of "did they teach you that in phoenix online" (or something to that effect). Do
you think of online degrees the same? If you have one from an online
school have you ever received any negative comments or any issues with
jobs, interviews, etc. because of it? LMKS...

In the state of GA, teachers are paid based on education/certificate level and they've started limiting which master degree programs they will acknowledge for your pay raise. The only one I think they still acknowledge is Walden, which I've heard they plan to stop acknowledging them.
It really sucks for me as a teacher because its hard to find master degree programs in my area that fit my schedule OR to even find the programs for my major being offered online :(
I just want a little extra paper

Bc theyre for profit and not really big on learning. For my field, nursing, you cant really do much with an online degree. Employers need for you to have gone to school, to have gone to clinical and all those other things. There are also restrictions and certain expectations that an applicant has to meet before theyre accepted. With online schools, they'll accept anyone and an accredited school will require a certain amount of hours on campus. I remember my school had interviewed a prospect for a professor position and they asked her why it didnt take her long to complete her master's and they realized that she received it from one of the colleges you see Lil Romeo rapping for. Needless to say that she didnt get the job.

As I am beginning to see, even at legitimate online schools, which are extensions of actual universities, the problem can be lazy professors and students. Cheating is rampant at online institutions. I caught several of my classmates cheating when they contributed to online discussions and the professor didn't call them on it. So, sometimes it's not the institution that makes online degrees worthless--it's the students themselves.

These are, but I think they still require some time on campus. At least 1 class

Silly question: How do online schools conduct tests to ensure students know the material before passing them? Every test is open book/notes right? No way you can fail unless you just don't do the assignments? ...Nothin' like an open note test.
