Yes they did. They left identifying with the protagonist and "savior" by telling themselves they were more  like him than the white cartoonish caricatures that hardly anyone in their right mind could relate to

ETA: Why do YOU think that Whites are going to this movie in droves?
Do we now think that White people have suddenly taken a liking to being enlightened about their evil and can watch American history through the lens of the Black perspective or is this yet another movie that pacifies the Black experience by giving the White audience a savior to root for

Waltz was a caricature also though.
