							MI Senate Proposes Bill Requiring Community Service for Welfare

											Michigan State Senator Joe Hune, R-Hamburg, sponsored 
legislation that was introduced on Tuesday that would require public 
assistance recipients to participate in community service

								"People benefiting from public assistance should do something
 to give back to the community that is providing them with a helping 
hand and that is exactly what my bill does."

											Senate Bill 276, introduced by Hune, was originally Senate
 Bill 905, from last fall's legislative session, and did not pass.  
Senate Bill 276 would require recipients of cash assistance who are not 
exempt from the Jobs, Education, and  Training programs to take part in 
community service programs.

											"People benefiting from public assistance should do 
something to give back to the community that is providing them with a 
helping hand, and that is exactly what my bill does," said Hune. "I am 
glad that these common sense reforms are moving forward."  

											Senate Bill 276 was referred to the Senate Families, Seniors, and Human Services Committee for further consideration.
