you do realize that while quasi need based, these loans HAVE to be paid back with interest?  and i don't even think they can be discharged with a bankruptcy...so the bank WILL most likely GET their money and then some.

but because of that, you shouldn't take more than you need in an attempt to try to create a certain lifestyle. i've never taken out a loan, but im sure you can choose to only accept the amount you need and only a little more. 

you will have that loan whether or not the gov't decides to give you the pell grant. the grant is trying to ease any loans that you will take. and yet students still take money that is twice the amount of their tuition.

but what a student signs up to pay back in the future (and it WILL be paid back unless they just don't ever work EVER)  has nothing to do with thier need in the present,  imo...
