Exactly this is why I cannot understand why anyone would think deregulating financing college and leaving students who are already in financial need to the private sector is a good idea.
The Govt caps student loans at 50k for 4 year degrees and they only cover a certain amount per a semester. If there was 0 financial aid Bank of America would just create a 35% interest loan for Tyrone to get a degree in music production from ICDC college. Then they would sell his loan to a blind trust and start the process over again.

This is already happening and has been happening for years. The only difference between the mortgage bubble and the student loan bubble is that student loans can't be discharged in bankruptcy.

I wish I could just walk away from my student loans (and mine are tiny compared to most people I know) the way many people have walked away from their mortgages.

All of these schools are for profit. Tuition goes up every year without fail & folks are taking out loan after loan. I would even go so far as to say the govt will eventually start creating debtors prisons again.

no one held a gun to their heads and told them to go to a very expensive school and take up a non-STEM major. ppl need to stop placing the entire blame on institutions and look at themselves

jr.

Very true. I'm all for personal responsibility. But, I also recognize that the system is set up in a certain way...and the people who set it up did it that way so that they can continue to make a profit.

They're all in on it...the schools themselves (and not just for-profit schools like phoenix...it's private and public non-profit schools as well), the government, and the loan companies. It's all a business and when it comes to business, the consumer is not the one that's meant to come out ahead.

Also, these same people are now spinning the "well you should've just gone into STEM (or IT) and then you'd be employed" fantasy. Yes it's true they have lower unemployment rates but the picture isn't nearly as rosy as they'd have you believe.

The way the financial aid system and schools period is set up is horrible as hell IMO so you can't fully even blame them person. Especially when you have poor students who, halfway through the school year, get tricked out of funds they were told they would get so they end up not even getting as much FA and/or scholarships as they were promised.

The issue is the dream is not going anywhere. Taking away the means to achieve the dream at a subsidized cost does not improve the problem.Folks are still going to find a way to fund the "American dream" to their detriment I think more focus on preparing students for the realities of college and the workforce is needed. Courses in high school about borrowing and personal finance should be mandatory. Teaching kids about the financial aid and loan systems as well as focusing on math and science programs in high school and teaching kids about careers in their markets is what is needed.

FA doesnt always mean its a loan...lol would be a lack luster riot of u just got grants. Theres more to succeeding after college than just getting a degree. In reality the degree is for show ...college is more about networking and making connections more than anything imo. If you are willing to go the extra mile be it relocating or working ur way up to ur dream job u are more likey to have a better outcome.

More people have loans than grants because every person who doesn't live in squalor makes too much money.(from what I see)

Yup yup. Endowment funds invested in the same companies that are committing banking fraud. Buildings built and salaries paid from funds from donors who make their money from those same companies.

How do we tell people what to major in without over-saturating the job market at some point down the line?
