I think that just being an example can sometimes be powerful enough to encourage change.
But, I also think it's the responsibility of those who are successful in the community to help others as much as they possibly can. I think the Asian community is a good example of how those who become successful reach back and around to help others in their community reach and exceed their success.
Unfortunately, blacks need a lot of help with just the absolute basics (how to care for yourself, parenting, getting through k-12 successfully) and those things are the hardest to help with because when it comes from someone who's "made it", black people tend to perceive that as the helper looking down on them.

My bff BIL came here from el salvador in 2007( illegally) he did not speak a word of english. He now speaks english fluently, owns a home and a business. You know how he did this? He stationed himself in a sanctuary city and got help from his own people. And now employs other immigrants trying to get ahead.

I feel you on that! I think that some black people who get to a certain level almost come to enjoy being "the only one" who made it and others fear what it may look like if they bring too many others along.

I can't speak for everyone but i for one know the importance of having a black mentor. I have had many black mentors that have helped me, so I am going to give back to other young black kids when i make it. I think your friend has a point, but I believe that the black community needs more mentoring.

My lips was a-twistin too. We both work/have worked in academia and if there's one field where black people should be trying to help each other it's this one.

IMO I would be leery before mentoring anyone. I work in an industry known for shady dealings (entertainment). Black, white pink or green...I need to really know you and know what you're about before I'm going to take you under my wing. I don't even keep regular interns because access to my contact list is like access to the holy grail (for me). I worked hard for what I've achieved, and the risk of having someone ruin my business (which has happened to clients of mine who hired someone who stole their client list, etc etc.) is too high for me to blindly start helping anyone just because they're female/black/came from a similar background. Trust is earned, not just given because we share common ancestry.

Nope
If they want to actually do something w themselves but lack the capital to do so, yes.
Mentor ship, yes....if they genuinely want to learn/expand/grow.

I don't consider myself successful yet....but I am doing a lot better than most people I grew up with. My husband and I have tried to help but everyone wants hand outs.
Instead of wanting to learn how to make $... They just want to "hold something"

i have an LS getting her phd at Harvard in AAAS....and when she told me those negroes are so territorial my face was like

i have had many black women tell me that other black women are law firms are the ones you need to watch out for. i was surprised and saddened.
