Should Successful Black Ppl Help other Blacks?

I think that just being an example can sometimes be powerful enough to encourage change.

But, I also think it's the responsibility of those who are successful in the community to help others as much as they possibly can. I think the Asian community is a good example of how those who become successful reach back and around to help others in their community reach and exceed their success.

Unfortunately, blacks need a lot of help with just the absolute basics (how to care for yourself, parenting, getting through k-12 successfully) and those things are the hardest to help with because when it comes from someone who's "made it", black people tend to perceive that as the helper looking down on them.

I can't speak for everyone but i for one know the importance of having a black mentor. I have had many black mentors that have helped me, so I am going to give back to other young black kids when i make it. I think your friend has a point, but I believe that the black community needs more mentoring.

IMO I would be leery before mentoring anyone. I work in an industry known for shady dealings (entertainment). Black, white pink or green...I need to really know you and know what you're about before I'm going to take you under my wing.

I don't even keep regular interns because access to my contact list is like access to the holy grail (for me). I worked hard for what I've achieved, and the risk of having someone ruin my business (which has happened to clients of mine who hired someone who stole their client list, etc etc.) is too high for me to blindly start helping anyone just because they're female/black/came from a similar background.

Trust is earned, not just given because we share common ancestry.

I don't consider myself successful yet....but I am doing a lot better than most people I grew up with. My husband and I have tried to help but everyone wants hand outs.

Instead of wanting to learn how to make $... They just want to "hold something"
