I have a wig from enoya. It came in an unexpected color, like a brown/auburn ginger color. I washed it today and all this brown dye came out in the bath. It is now full on yellowy ginger which looks horrible on me. It won't let me upload a photo.

But I need to dye it. Can I use a drug store dye like loreal or schwarzkopf? In an ash blonde or should I dye it brown?

My only worry with dying it brown was that I would dye the lace as my lace color is currently transparent and I have a light colored silk top. I heard a tip about applying vaseline or hair gel to the lace to stop it from staining but Im confused. Do you apply it to the inside so it soaks through? or do you apply it to the top of the lace? if you apply it to the top of the lace wont it get on the hair?

Aphelion, what color did you ask for when you ordered?  My concern is that if the wig was dyed with Rit Dye, you may get unexpected color results.  Maybe you can dye the wig in a color that is closer to the color you asked for, but I'd do a strand test first.

Regarding protecting the silk, you can try using a hair dye fabric protector on top of the silk, but make sure you use a small brush at the roots when applying the dye, like a root applicator that comes with hair dye root kits.  In this way, you can more carefully dye the roots without getting dye on the silk.

I like to use a mascara wand for coloring the roots

I had a wig that did that, and I suggest dying it brown. Select a dye that will do the least amount of damage to the hair. It's already bleached, which is why it is orange, and bleaching it again might cause unwanted damage.
