Why do black people, especially those in America, have more pleasant sounding voices than their white counterparts?
I personally can't sing for sh!t, but I was just talking about the elephant in the room.

Is it something to do with the throat, nostrils, practice, coincidence, confidence, interest? Also, to me, AAs sing better than africans themselves(i'm african) in terms of being on key.

I do like south african music though(they sing very well) and this west african singer Angelique Kidjo with her famous song(will be used in the SA World Cup).

im my opinion.. and this is in no way scientifically founded..it all come down to personal preference.. and whats more marketable..  black people have more character when they sing.. which can make it seem as though they sing better.. they add in more runs and riffs.. since some singers voices naturally do it.. when someone whose voice doesnít sound that way naturally attempts to do them.. they may sound forced and awkward.. could also be do to cultural influences.. while people or even Asian people who engulf themselves in out culture emulate our singing better.

I don't know that one group sings better than the other.  I think there might be differences in vocal chord length, or something, that might be more distributed across one genetic group than the other.

I think a lot of times there are tonal qualities that might be associated with different ethnic groups.  I've heard a lot of white singers with amazing voices, some are more suited to "rock" music (people like Ann and Nancy Wilson, Patti Smyth, Pat Benatar, etc).

But then again that is probably more due to social visibility and what we're used to seeing as far as associating different ethnicities with certain genres.  I don't have any hard data to back up these claims, so I hesitate to say that it's a scientific reality rather than a general observation.

Interesting answers... thanks!
I just see this question posed over and over again, by people of different ethnicities.
I also noticed that Filipinos(darker asians) sing very well. These are just my little observations.

I agree there seems to be more character and runs in black singing styles.

I'm not sure why, actually. I definitely can't sing and I'm African:( I'm really glad Angelique's song has been chosen for the World Cup! She has the most amazing, powerful voice

Thats not true. There are people that can't sing, and there are those that could.

I don't think it can even be proven. Amy whinehouse is a better singer than Beyonce. Most people in Operas are white Europeans. Its just what you are exposed to.
