Say you're "overhearing" a convo

Depends on what is bad and if it is true or not 

if i didnt know the people talking i wouldnt do anything and i dont see the point of repeating it to the love one unless what was being said is damaging.

that happened to me at church when i was about 9.  i was sitting at a table and these older ladies were talking about my older cousin and her kids and making speculation about whether or not the kids all had belonged to her husband.  i quickly told them that was my cousin they were talking about.  the whole room shut down.  i never repeated the story to my family.

tell her
