Topic: Same braids for 1 year? Posted: Feb 13 2013 at 7:58pm |
I discovered this youtuber who plans on keeping the same braids (her own hair in box braids) for 1 year She has done it for 6 months before with great results Length Check #2_My Braid Journey
So my question is, I really, really, want to to do the same thing, that is, keep a protective style (threads) in for 3 months straight. However, I have some trepidations that may be alleviated by your respective responses.
In your opinion, is hair more likely to dread when it's braided or loose? I don't know if I should first braid my hair and then wrap it around in thread or wrap my loose hair instead. Thanks!

I have 4a/b hair and my hair would start to dread after about a month of wearing in braids. I wonder what she did with the new growth as it grew in

My hair would most likely dred if I left in braids for 3 months straight. I haven't left them in for even 2 months, I usually take them out in about a month and a half bc I get tired of the style. Good luck on your goal (not sure what to advise about your question)
ETA: I thought you were talking about extension braids! I clicked the link, my hair would definitely dred if I ever tried this

I was so impressed that I went through a slew of her vids in one night
It seems hot oil treatments help in making the braids look presentable and she leaves out a bang area and puts in medium sized twists which she re-twists when it starts looking bad.

That's what I'm afraid would happen to me but I'm still leaning towards giving it a try. Ca-ca-ca-crazy

watched some of her videos she really takes care of her i could see why they don't dread up and her ends don't look braided as tight as the rest of her hair. just in one month of her hair being braided she did alot. if you mimic her you should be ok.

Thank you, Rell. I'm going to give it the old college try. Wish me luck.

It seems incredibly clever to do that but with me washing twice a week I might as well welcome my new dread journey. Good luck and you should start your own thread so we can watch your progress :) hint hint

I try to keep them in for 12 weeks at a time. They don't dread-up. I keep them well moisturised. The growth is good. I couldn't keep them in longer because of the growth and I have little fluff reservoirs in most braids which I imagine would not be so little if I kept them in for longer.. I see them as temporary until I reach a goal.

OP, I don't have experience with hair threading but I think whether your hair dreads or not depends on the characteristics of your hair. My hair doesn't "stick" to itself so I would have to go out of my way to make it dread. I can leave braids in forever and wash them often and my hair won't dread or get matted at all.
Why don't you try it and see what happens? Do some of your hair with braids and then the thread and some of it without. If you unravel a couple every few weeks then you can keep track of whether it's starting to dread and take them all out if you need to.
