I have many problems with files on our server becoming locked. They can be copied, opened (doesn't say read only) but they cannot be saved, moved, (cut/pasted) or deleted.
This usually happens with PDF files although today we are having excel files with the same problem.
I went to computer manager and made sure no one had the file open (some people have the folder open, but no one has a http://www.kakasoft.com/advanced-folder-lock/how-to-lock-s. - lock file.)
I checked permissions and my effective permissions are full control.
I can even take ownership and that works fine!"
If you have content that you want to hide from students, you can store that content in files or folders and then lock those files or http://www.kakasoft.com/advanced-folder-lock/ - folder lock.
Caution: We recommend using the "Lock until I manually unlock it" setting on files or folders that you want to protect. In some cases, instructors who have chosen the setting that allows students to download or view the file/folder (but not show in student's file listings) discovered that students received direct links to files with those settings. In addition, when instructors upload files to the main directory, other files/folders became available. As of 10/23/2012, this is a known issue that Instructure is working to fix.
