I don't think it damages the hair-- it opens the cuticle (hence = Clarify) but it's not damaging. The surface feels rougher to the touch but damage isn't automatically the result.  I agree to be careful, but the natural remedy as well as using a mild agent will yield desired results.

Well just to keep you updated. Yesterday I didnt feel like doing the baking soda step because I had to install this hair and go to bed as I work really early in the morning and I gotsta get my 8 hrs in. I dont play that with my sleep. But I digress........... I wash the hair with clarifying shampoo again, did a roller set and then brushed the hair out really really good. It helped a little, but as someone said earlier I know that in time it will become duller so I feel like im on the right path of getting to the lower luster that I desire.
 
But still, if anyone has any suggestions, im sure it may be helpful to someone. Please post them
