They seem to be making light of the situation in those pics, why can't we? Confused

Thank you for the hugs ladies!!!!

My aunt's insurance through her job covered most of her treatment. They found out it was stage 4 colon cancer on May 21, 2010. It had already spread to her liver by this time. They determined liver cancer but needed to know where it came from since its rare for cancer to originate in the liver.

She had lost 30 pounds or more the month before and had tumors on her liver. She had surgery that next week to remove the diseased part of hee colon. She was due to start chemo the next few weeks but was too ill. The chemo would kill her. Soon after that her liver had stopped working and had swollen to the size of two footballs. It affected her breathing. Liver stopped breaking down medications and filtering her blood. She was drinking gallons of water and having no urine output. She was swollen from water and toxin retention. She stopped eating and wanted ice.

I got a call from my mom saying they don't expect her to live into the next week. I drove home and spent that last weekend with her. The last thing I told her was that I love her. She died July 21, 2010 at 46 years old.

Yall its hard watching a vibrant and kind woman deteriorate in 2 months and die..

If worse comes to worse, Real may succumb to liver cancer bc its not much that can be done when you have liver cancer, unless he gets a transplant. That won't be likely since his cancer has spread. I send my prayers to him and his family. So young....

And to TC, Star, and Coco..

This may sound wrong, but I am glad my mom didn't pass from cancer. After seeing my aunt die from that, I don't think I could watch my mom die from cancer. Cancer sucks so bad... It leaves destruction behind in its path..

well most people (and their eligible family) have health insurance thru their employer and the premiums are shared between the employer and them (deducted from their salary).  so as long as the person is working the premiums are covered and this issue would only come up when they get sick to the point when they can no longer work.

however, for those who are self-employed (like chance is more than likely) or working for a company that does not offer health insurance it's a whole nother story.  these people have to get individual health insurance ($$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$) on their own or apply for medicaid.

if these people have money/assets, they have to burn thru that before they can qualify for medicaid.

anyway, the coverage generally stops at the end of the month the last premium is recieved...

getting insurance after you are already sick (being treated for a sickness) and can no longer work

well will prove to be either very difficult or very expensive

Thanks. It makes no sense to me that they would stop paying for the time when you most need it. I am getting sort of riled up thinking about it. I guess if you have FMLA, then you might still be covered but other than that Cry

we do... a lot of people are uneducated about healthcare

and with the number of people on BHM who's parents are getting older...

and with the number of us looking to be self employed at some point in our lives...

we need to be educated.

I'm sorry he's going through this and I hope he beats the odds.
If he doesn't, I wish him a serene passing away.

BTW, regular checkups don't mean much in certain types of cancer, my husband went for a checkup (blood test, abdominal ultrasound, ECG, urine test) and a couple of months later he had the first symptoms of Hodgkin's lymphoma. He was diagnosed as stage 4. However, Hodgkin's lymphoma is quite treatable and the chemotherapy scheme he went through gives a lasting remission in about 90% of people in stage 4. He is completing tratment now, please keep him in your prayers.

This sounds like what happened to my aunt last year. She died 4 days before her 47 birthday.
