it means what it says. a thread will go a certain way based on the starter most of the time.
i have a bad habit of pulling out my eyelashes.. ive been doing it for years. there were times when i was a lot younger where i had almost no lashes.. they don't look bad right now ive learned how to stop myself after a few lashes, but i wish i could completely stop.
