I just decided to do it. Sucks. They agreed to do it in 3 checks. I can't afford to NOT have a job right now.

^^ Im glad they are spacing it out.

But to answer the original question, yeah you'd have to pay. Just as if you were given a raise that is retroactive a certain date and the employer would compensate for that, same rules apply.

while it's not the ideal outcome, i'm glad there was the possibility to space it out rather than demand a lump sum. i'm also thankful you caught it when you did and that it only takes three checks to rectify the situation.

I think they can take it back...sad to say.
 
My job fckd up my first pay check. It was $200 higher than supposed to be and a supervisor told the payroll dept. Let's just say I kept my mouth shut and swore my check was fine since the sups never asked to see it. I wish they would take it back! (cross fingers/knocks on wood)

That sucks! That happened to me when I left my previous job and received to much vacation pay.. they called me with a quickness! I was soo mad! I'm glad they are working with you on paying it back though.
